◎本學科內容概述：
本課程提供本科學生一探英文散文堂奧的機會，從英美文學各時期的小說或議論文中，訓練學生吸收佳文佳句，以便應用於日常表達中。別於詩歌，散文的日常應用，隨處可見，英文本科生可透過努力研討散文結構、修辭、典故等等，培養各式散文的閱讀與自我表達能力。 |
◎本學科教學內容大綱：
本課程始於學欣賞，模仿，終於創新。從欣賞佳文佳句，到自我創新寫作，我筆寫我心，我手書我口。欣賞作品從古至今，如十八、十九世紀維多利亞散文小說，美國散文大家Emerson、Thoreau的作品，20世紀英美散文大家如George Orwell，E. B. White, James Thurber 等等。創新部份則會要求學生結合現代人表達的需求，以英文記錄自已的所思所見並所得，亦可評寫議論大家之作，作為學術研究前導課程。 |
◎本學科學習目標：
An essay addresses the reader directly, without, in most cases, the mediation of a narrator in fiction. The author speaks to the reader in his/her own voice, seeking to impress, engage, persuade, or provoke the reader. His/Her style and content must work together to achieve his/her end. This course guides students to read a writing genre that is less emphasized in literary reading training. Students will read some first-rate prose writings from a number of major writers in the English-speaking world. Reading carefully organized words on the page, we are to appreciate and learn from one of the most productive means of conversation - writing. |
