◎本學科學習目標: This course provides an introduction to academic writing and basic research skills. Focusing on the development of research-based essays and short research reports, the course guides students through the essential stages of academic inquiry: selecting and narrowing a topic, formulating research questions, locating and evaluating credible sources, and integrating evidence effectively and ethically. Students will learn to write clear thesis statements, organize coherent paragraphs, and apply appropriate citation conventions such as APA or MLA.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental structure and conventions of academic writing.
2. Locate, evaluate, and integrate academic sources appropriately.
3. Paraphrase, summarize, and avoid plagiarism using proper citation formats.
4. Write effective introductions, thesis statements, topic sentences, and coherent paragraphs.
5. Produce a mini research paper with academic formatting and referencing. |

◎課程要求: 1. Class etiquette: You are expected to attend classes every week. If you must be absent from class, you take responsibility for the absence. Notify us in advance through the university official leave system. You will not pass the course once you miss the class with no excuses over four times.
2. Collaboration and academic integrity: There are some homework assignments in our class. You are permitted to work with other students, but you must write up the draft on your own. Plagiarism is a serious academic misconduct. Late homework is not accepted either except for compelling reasons and with prior permission of the instructor. You will get “0” for both of the cases.
3. Generative AI tools, like OpenAI’s GPT-5 or Gemini, have become valuable resources for language learning based on their advanced language models. In this course, we may use these tools as a supplemental resource to help identify repetitive errors and enhance your writing. Detailed guidelines on AI use will be provided in class. Please remember that using AI to directly generate arguments or writing without proper citation is considered plagiarism and will result in a grade of ZERO. |
