◎本學科學習目標: The course aims to pave ways for students who want to study literature in their graduate programs by giving them a glimpse of the origins of western literature. Students' reading ability is strongly expected in this course on the basis that they will have to read a lot, literally on their own, of texts, original as well as translated ones from the repertoire of classical literary pieces. Discussion is as well expected and encouraged, for a course full of lectures would damp not only the students' interests in literature but the teacher's enthusiasm in having a dialogical relationship with you guys. |

◎課程要求: 1. Attendance is the base of your class performance, without which students will lose 20 % of your final score. Three absences from class, with no satisfying cause, will mean failure in this course.
2. The whole class will be divided into groups of 4-5 for class activities (including discussions, oral reports and dramatic performance. |
◎成績考核 課堂參與討論15% : Class discussion will be held. Students have to prepare for the study questions as offered beforehand before the class begins. 小考25% : Quizzes are given and marked to see if the students are finished with assigned reading section for each week. 期中考30% : Fact-based midterm is to be held on the ninth week, plus some essay questions to be answered. (1.5 hour) 期末考30% : (Weeks 17-18) Students will be asked to give an oral report (or drama performance) on any of the assigned dramas. (groups of 3, 10 mins) 補充說明:1. Tips for the course: Understand the text(reading), talk about the text(class discussion), and then write about the text(written reports).
To better understand the text, students should first read/watch online materials for summaries and analyses to be found there (websites as below). Then prepared for the discussion, they can enjoy different viewpoints from their peers and the teacher during the discussion. Finally, if they are interested in specific topics, they can write their insights/reflections for the written report at the end of the semester.
2. Study questions for each work will be given in advance before the section begins, so that you will have enough time to chew over the questions before they come to the class. Of course, they should always finish reading the covered texts before they can talk about them. |
