本學科介紹中文的各項特色,並對比中文和英文的各項次領域,另外也請學生閱讀相關的研究文章以發覺議題之所在。

This course aims to develope in you a basic understanding of the characteristic similarities and differences between Chinese and English. The topics to be covered include contrastive analyses of the two languages in the linguistic domains. Accordingly, this course will feature topics pertaining to Chinese pronouciation, Chinese characters, interjections, color word, tense and aspect in Chinese and English, and clause and sentence in English. There are readings related to the non-linguistic domains as well, as shown in the book chapters or articles of Tides from the West, My Country and My People, Learning Chinese, turning Chinese, From body to meaning in culture, “On the possibility of Mandarin Chinese as a lingua franca”, etc.

◎課程要求:
1. Mid-term examination: 30%
Test questions are based on my class lectures and the textbook chapters and chapter exercises. The format may comprise matching, definition of the term (名詞解釋), application, and essay questions.
2. Final examination: 30% (Same as the above)
3. Assignment and exercise: 20%
On a regular basis, you have to do in-class or after-class assignments or exercises that build up your understanding of this course. The assigned work may be done individually or as a pair/group. You will be asked to share your work orally to get a score or grade you deserve.
Unless indicated otherwise, you have to submit the hard copy and upload the electronic file of each piece of work. A failure to do so will result in your obtaining of only the score/grade for the hard copy or the electronic file.

補充說明:4. Attendance and other criteria: 20%: This category is related to your attendance, course preparation, and participation in the class activity. Absence for three times or more may contribute to your failure in this course as each ineligible absence costs you FIVE points of the semester score. You are reminded to pay attention to the following attendance policy: 1. Please inform me of your absence prior to the class, with the reason explained. 2. You need to do the informing by yourself, rather than asking others to pass your message, unless you are physically incompetent. This can be done in written or spoken form. 3. Constant late arrivals also lead to a deduction of score.
