◎本學科內容概述: 本課程旨在帶領學生對美國從殖民地時期到20世紀時期的文學作品有一個通盤的認識。課程的內容涵蓋四大文類:詩歌、散文、小說與戲劇,所選讀的作品取材自不同時期中,主流社會或少數族群的重要作家之代表作品。學生藉由以研讀文本為主,觀賞視覺媒體藝術為輔的學習方式,得以深入瞭解美國多元文化的精神、理念與價值觀,並且提升自身的英語能力。 |

◎本學科學習目標: The course aims to pave ways for students who are interested in western/American literature by giving them a glimpse of the three main literary genres, namely prose, poetry and drama to be found in American literature. Students' reading ability is strongly expected in this course on the basis that they will have to read and understand the texts before they can talk or write about the pieces of literary works. |

◎課程要求: 1. Discussion is as well expected and encouraged, for a course full of lectures would damp not only the students' interests in literature but the teacher's enthusiasm in having a dialogical relationship with you guys.
2. Attendance is the base of your class performance, without which students will lose 20 % of your final score. Three absences from class, with no satisfying cause, will mean failure in this course.3
3. The whole class will be divided into groups of 5-6 for class activities. |
◎成績考核 課堂參與討論20% : Class discussion will be held. Students have to prepare for the study questions as offered beforehand before the class begins. 小考30% : Quizzes are given and marked to see if the students are finished with reading the required texts. 期中考25% : Fact-based midterm is to be held on the tenth week, plus some essay questions to be answered. 期末考25% : final 補充說明:1. Tips for the course: Understand the text(reading), talk about the text(class discussion), and then write about the text(written reports).
2. Study questions for each work will be given in advance before the section begins, so that students will have enough time to chew over the questions before they come to the class. Of course, they should always finish reading the covered texts before they can talk about them. |
