◎本學科內容概述:
William Shakespeare, the National Bard in English literature, is one of the most pivotal and favourite literary geniuses, whose influence is far-reaching and extensive. This course aims to offer close readings and analyses of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnet, as well as the theatre history at Shakespeare’s time.
◎本學科教學內容大綱:
Selected readings of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets will be closely studied. Students will understand the life of Shakespeare, learn the historical and cultural context of Shakespeare’s works, and appreciate the craft of William Shakespeare.
◎本學科學習目標:
1. To understand Shakespearean sonnets, tragedy, and comedy genres
2. To appreciate the poetics and rhetoric of Shakespeare's works
3. To understand the age of Shakespeare and Tudor period in England
4. To learn literary elements and motifs as well as literary terminology
5. To apprehend special issues on emotion, ways of expression, gender and ethnicity with a critical mind
6. To appropriate Shakespearean works to 21th-century Taiwanese mindset

1. Choose 1 to 3 favourite scenes in an Act from Othello/ A Midsummer Night's Dream / Romeo & Juliet, rewrite the script to represent these scenes based on your ideas and creativity.

1. Reading materials: you must either print out reading materials by yourself or download them for reading on portable device (such as smartphone, iPad, tablet, or laptop)
2. Preview the reading materials before class
3. You must actively engage in class discussion. 10% will be marked based on your class-discussion participation.
4. Any kind of leave must be made before class. An unexcused absence will lead to a deduction of scores on class participation.
